Just saw 'Anora' and man do I miss NYC. Sam Shepard said the only way to survive in New York City is to be an artist - and he's right. One you leave the creative class and join the rat race its kind of a lost cause. New York is not like Los Angeles, where people are hunkered down in bungalows in the hills. You see people in the street. I saw Lou Reed at the Apple Store, Michael Stipe eating ramen noodles, Julian Casablancas hanging on the corner, Rosie Perez at the ATM, Carrie Brownstein walking her dog; the list goes on and on.

Every now and then an REM cover band stops by Athens and the four original members of REM usually join in to some extent. Bill Berry is back there somewhere on tambourine. I remember being a teenager, playing "Life's Rich Pageant" for my dad on the way to soccer practice. He said, "This is really good."
This show actually highlighted an earlier R.E.M. album, "Fables of the Reconstruction". That album, maybe the height of R.E.M.'s mysteriousness, was produced by Joe Boyd (who also produced Pink Floyd, Nick Drake and James Booker).
